Editorial Policy
1) Purpose
This site is for South Walton residents and visitors to share local stories and discuss community topics in a neighborly, helpful way.
2) Scope
This policy applies to stories, forum posts and comments, event/resource submissions, photos, and shared links.
3) What We Encourage
- Local relevance: Content should relate to South Walton (events, places, services, local history, community updates).
- Constructive discussion: Critique ideas, decisions, and experiences—not people.
- Storytelling with context: Personal stories, recommendations, and “what I learned” posts are welcome when they’re clearly framed as experience/opinion.
4) Moderation: Our Approach
Moderation is designed to keep the space welcoming while minimizing disruption to conversation:
- We focus first on safety, privacy, harassment, and spam.
- We may remove or reduce visibility for clear policy violations.
- For borderline cases, we may prefer edits or a clarification prompt rather than removal.
5) Acceptable Content
Allowed content includes:
- Personal experiences and opinions (e.g., “My experience with X”)
- Community discussion (questions, suggestions, debates)
- Sharing links to official information (town/county/state resources), news, or other helpful references
- Photos that you have rights to share and that don’t reveal private personal info
6) Prohibited Content (Will Be Removed)
We remove content that includes:
- Harassment or bullying (including targeted insults, dogpiling, and threats)
- Hate speech or dehumanizing language toward any person or group
- Threats or incitement of harm
- Doxxing / privacy invasion: home addresses, personal phone numbers, private emails/IDs, or other identifying information about private individuals
- Sexual content involving minors or exploitation
- Scams/spam/malware or repeated promotion with no community value
- Impersonation (posing as officials/organizations or misleading others about identity)
- Illegal wrongdoing instructions (where facilitated)
- Copyright-infringing uploads or reposts without rights
7) Privacy & Safety Guidelines (Especially for a Local Community)
- Avoid posting details that could enable harassment (e.g., “Here’s where they live/work”).
- Don’t share private individuals’ information unless it’s clearly public in an official context.
- If something involves immediate danger, users should contact emergency services rather than rely on the forum.
8) Accuracy, Rumors, and Disagreements
- If you’re stating facts (closures, policies, dates, public safety info), include links or credible references when possible.
- Rumors must be labeled as rumors or speculation.
- Disagreements are fine; personal attacks are not.
9) Forum Conduct
In forum discussions:
- Use respectful language; assume good faith.
- Stay on topic or relate back to South Walton.
- Do not repeatedly derail threads with spam, off-topic posting, or “gotcha” behavior.
- Encourage solutions and community benefit where possible.
10) Stories
Stories may include opinion and firsthand experience, but:
- Misleading presentation of rumors as facts is not allowed.
- Content should not target private individuals with unverified claims.
- If you’re discussing a real person’s actions, keep it fair and avoid unnecessary personal details.
11) Enforcement (Light, Proportional)
Moderation actions may include:
- Remove content that clearly violates policy
- Edit titles/formatting for clarity (only when meaning remains intact)
- Warn for first-time or minor tone issues
- Temporary restrictions for repeat issues
- Permanent bans for severe violations (threats, doxxing, exploitation) or repeated ban evasion
12) Reporting
Users may report content that violates policy. Reports should include:
- A link to the story/comment/thread
- What rule was violated
- Short explanation (and any relevant evidence)
13) Appeals
If your content is removed or your account is restricted, you can appeal by contacting: [add contact method]. Appeals should be calm and specific.
14) Copyright & Image Rights
By posting/uploading, you represent you have the rights to share the material. Give credit where appropriate.
15) Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy over time. Continued use after updates indicates acceptance.
