Western Lake

Western Lake stretches between Grayton Beach and WaterColor. It’s one of the larger coastal dune lakes with extensive marsh and connected wetlands. Small motorboats are allowed on the Grayton town side and you might even see an occasional water skier.

Much of Grayton Beach State Park surrounds Western Lake with a boat ramp offering launch point, canoe, and kayak rentals. Within the park there are trails along the lake, picnic shelters, and abundant wildlife.

Within the town of Grayton Beach, the lake flows to the Gulf and so the lake can be accessed at the beach, and there is a public boat ramp just down from the Red Bar on Hotz Avenue. Western Lake is about 200 acres in size.

Grayton Beach State Park is an excellent place to explore the lake. The park has pristine landscapes, camping, nature trails, picnic areas and is a popular spot for paddling.

Visit Grayton Beach Flatwoods Trail and the connected Western Lake Loop which wind through pine flatwoods and around small freshwater ponds, which are a natural habitat for wading birds, water birds and lowland birds.

The Barrier Dunes Nature Trail winds along the lake and through the dunes – it is a must do in SoWal.
