We canoed on the Econfina Creek last year and it was nice but really lacked places to pull off and rest like sandbars. Never had canoed before but successfully canoed the whole 7 miles in 3 and a half hours and we did not tump over. I have to say this place really freaked us out because it looked like you were canoeing in the movie Deliverance. When we arrived back to the canoe place after being picked up the guy asked if we had encountered anyone swinging off of ropes into the water trying to tump us over. He explained they had to call police before because of that very thing. The rope swings up high really had us questioning things. When he said that that is all I needed to hear! We did not go off in any of the springs along the trip but I now wished we had. Wondering if anyone has canoed the Blackwater River near Pensacola? It seems more suited to our having access to ample big sandbars where we could pull off and picnic! Any other canoe rental site suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

One more thing, try to NEVER hold on to a branch while the canoe is moving. You may find yourself in the water. Just DUCK!

Nice to post to someone who is from Memphis. I will check out that sight. We plan on doing some cycling either at Shelby Forest when a little warmer or at Shelby Farms. We just were not aware of anyone who had that here. They do provide the transport of you and your canoe back don't they? Have you ever heard of the Flatwoods Canoe Base in Linden, Tennessee? I hope your weather is better there then here. It is a very cold 42 degrees here and they are saying we could have snow showers overnight. Thanks for the info!

We just were not aware of anyone who had that here. Do they rent canoes because we do not own one. We rented one at Econfina. That is the main problem is finding one who rents the canoe to you and picks you back up. Have you ever heard of the Flatwoods Canoe Base in Linden, Tennessee? They have canoe rentals there. There are tons of sites dedicated to Blackwater River. When I was a kid growing up in lower Ala., everyone used to go there to canoe. Have fun!

Which is easier...canoeing or kayaking?

Which is easier...canoeing or kayaking?
Well that is a tough question. Although they are similar, they are a bit different. Typically, kayaking requires a bit more steadiness so that you don't tip over. The good thing is that your center of gravity is very low in kayaks so tipping over is not too common in calm water.
Canoeing may be a bit more difficult. For one reason, the height of the canoe adds wind resistence and paddling can be more difficult on windy lakes. Also the center of gravity is higher than the kayak and some canoes can be tippy. Canoes, like Kayaks can be designed for different features. Some are long and skinny for faster speed in smooth water while other boats are shorter and wider for easier maneuverabilty and greater stability. Most of the canoes that people rent tend to be wider bodied so that canoe is more stabile.
Most people probably find Kayaking easier to handle. Get the single seat kayak and you may find it easier to get around in than having to communicate something you know little about (kayaking) with another person in the boat. That part may be another project in itself. There are sit on tops (kayaks) and there are sit ins. Both are great. The sit ins found around here will not lock you in as many people fear after watching people white water kayak in the rough rivers of eastern TN. These kayaks are a little different. If you want a free trial of some kayaks, contact Marlese at the Kayak Experience in Destin, located on the Harbour. She host demo days once a month. I think it is on the first Sat of the month, but you can contact her to find out for sure. Mostly, she carries higher end kayaks but they will give you the feel and you can explore the Destin Harbour and see some Dolphins. While you are there, shop around. She carries other funn things too, like Chaco's, navigational maps, river maps to kayak or canoe, etc. Marlese is another example of good local peeps. ;-)

Thanks SJ....I will try the kayak out next time on Western Lake. I can almost imagine the peaceful sound of just an oar in the water. We did a lot of circling in the canoes...and laughing!

Oh, I got it, I've just been busy and couldn't answer yet. I'm originally from Andalusia, about 10 min. from the FL state line. I tell people who ask where I'm from that I'm from south Alabama. I say that because it's sooooo different from the northern half of AL. People think that is so weird, like I mean S. Carolina, S. Dakota. This part of Florida was refered to as Lower Alabama (LA). Gov Wallace failed in doing so, but the name, LA, is still floating around today, although it is mostly used to refer to property in southern Alabama and not Florida.

Sounds like a lot of people must call South Alabama LA, but it just kind of started on one of my past trips to Los Angeles when someone asked where I was from and they apparently couldn't understand and kept saying where, where. Finally, I just said LA. We had all had a few cocktails so they never really caught it (they must have had more than a few thought if my southern drawl didn't give it away).
Thanks for the tid bit of history.
