Want to trade plants?

I have a couple types of plants in my yard that just seem to grow, multiply, and have offshoots.

I would love to have a plant exchange! Plants can be an expensive investment, and this is a great way to share with our neighbors.

Here are some plants I have that I would be willing to trade.

Century Plant - it is part of the agave family. It gets really big, and doesn't require any extra love. Great if you have an area of the yard that your hose just doesn't reach. Works in sun, shade - you almost can't kill these things. (pics pulled of the net)

Canna - The variety that I have blooms yellow flowers. These come back bigger and better each year. The more you water, the bigger they grow, but will survive with little water - although they won't bloom. Low maintance, easy to grow. Happy in sun or shade, but does best in partial sun.

Wandering Jew - Low creeping foilage plant. Great in containers, or to fill in a garden bed. Awesome ground cover. Loves water, but will grow anywhere.

Wisteria - The purple blooming variety. A rapid growth vine. Very tolerate to everything. You do want to make sure that you set aside enough space for this one - and it can be invasive if you aren't careful. But the blooms and the smell in the spring ... wow.

Would love to add some new tresures to my yard - and share my treasures with you!

Gosh, I wish this thread had been started this spring. My husband removed a huge amount of plant material from the front yard this spring. We offered it to Eastern Nursery, but the person we talked to wasn't interested. Their labor costs would have outweighed the worth of the plant material.

Now all we have left that's tradable (had to look up the spelling of this word -- an "e" after the "d" is also correct -- LOL) are a few tiny native magnolias.

Unfortunately, in his zeal to get rid of all of those damned vines that won't die unless you pour straight RoundUp on them (sorry -- so anti-green  ), he killed all of the native rosemary and some other blooming native plant whose name escapes me.:(

I'd be interested in some canna ... *if* I can talk my hubby into doing the "labor" (digging) on Labor Day weekend.

No they are hardy but not wildflowers. You gotta get starts somewhere. I bought mine at Ace Home Helpers.

What a nice idea. I live too far to join you. I'm getting rid of some lambs ear. I think Ms Kitty may have some lambs ear she'd love to give away too. Be careful, they were loaded. she got stung.

In case you were waiting to see the plant that makes you swoon before you want to trade - here are two more plants that I could share!

Purple Heat - A happy little plant that you can put almost anywhere. Do make sure to take a bit inside over the winter - because it doesn't always do well in the cold. Having said that, I've left mine outside for years. It is a ground cover that blooms the pretty, delicate flowers.

A mimosa tree - I have a couple shoots (babies) that I would be happy to share. They are easy to grow, and can get really big. But, you can cut them back, personal choice. I love the fluffy blooms! I use the leaves to flower arrangments sometimes, a great sub for ferns. The supply on this tree is a little more limited, so let me know if you want to put your name on one!

I'm sure I will come up with something else I can share before it is over!

st--I have tons of this purple jew (that's what we call it) in my yard. I just pull it up and throw it wherever I want it to grow and it does...sometimes too much! I also have several huge mimosas in my front yard and they come up everywhere--:bang: I do love the blooms and the butterflies do too.

When you move down here I would be happy to give you some pointers. Some plants - like the century plant - just can't be killed if they are in the ground! I love plants like that. :D

This is the first year I have noticed mimosa sprouts - and we have lived in the same spot over ten years. I think when it got cut back by the power company it spurred the unusual growth. Unfortunately this tree in right under the power lines. Guess that was planned out right...

Mine get those "bean" seed pods after the bloom--and the seeds go everywhere!

They are pretty--but most horticulturists in this area consider them to be weeds...what do they know!!! They bloom here in June for about 3-4 weeks.

For some reason mine blooms a little later than everyone else's - but I rarely water it. This year it seemed to only bloom for 3-4 weeks but spring was so dry. Years before I think it bloomed for more like 6 weeks.

I've heard that before, but I love pretty weeds. I mean a weed just means that it is a sturdy natural plant that thrives in the area. It has always amazed me the line between a "plant" and a "weed". Who gets to decide when a weed is upgraded to plant status? (Think Lantana, Black Eyed Susans, Black Berries, etc)

I'm with ya. Oleanders are considered to be weeds too by many. I personally love them. I think you're right that most of them are just survivors! I have had many discussions with "native plant purists" who detest a lot of these "weeds". I try to go with natives when I can, but those mimosas were here before me and I couldn't just cut 'em down!
