Rosemary Beach

Rosemary Beach is a unique and picturesque beach town that brings an island charm and style to the eastern end of South Walton. One of a handful of New Urban towns on Scenic 30A, it’s a place that’s meant to be experienced on foot or by bike. Its narrow streets and paths are begging to be explored.

The oak canopy that shades the sidewalks and arches over Scenic 30A make the expansive town feel shady and welcoming. Richard Gibbs, the original town architect, specified many things about the town, including materials that would age naturally and give the town a patina.

Established in 1995, it’s name comes from the local Rosemary plants which grow among the sand dunes and along the trails in SoWal. Like the plant, Rosemary Beach has stand-out beauty, yet fits perfectly into the diverse South Walton community.

Rosemary Beach’s unique architecture is what first captures your attention, with its Dutch West Indies-inspired homes and commercial buildings. The town’s colors match those found in nature — mostly shades of rust, tan, green and brown. Homes are decorated with Bermuda shutters, wide second floor porches and arched garage doors.

Gates and fences open in Rosemary Beach with a latchkey, with steps often leading to entrances on the second floor. Walls line both sides of the solid entryway steps, a feature right out of the Caribbean. Lush and and private courtyards can be found in nearly every home.

Footpaths and boardwalks in Rosemary Beach lead to large decks over the dunes, providing access to the spectacular beach below. The classic Colonial-style architecture blends gracefully with the Gulf’s emerald waters and sugar-white beach.

Not only are Rosemary Beach shops and homes beautiful, but their authenticity and practicality makes it feel like this seaside village has existed for hundreds of years.

The markets that line Main Street and the town’s sprawling greens feature some of the best restaurants, shops and boutiques in the area. Amavida Coffee features fresh roasted coffee, delicious baked treats and often hosts local artists and musicians. Dining on the porch at Summer Kitchen Cafe is a great way to enjoy a cool evening, and those with a sweet tooth can get their fix at The Sugar Shak. Other must see places in the public square include the Town Hall and Post Office. And quite a few outdoor art installations.
